Introducing The Most Challenging Mountain Bike Trails on New Zealand’s South Island
New Zealand’s reputation as a mountain biking paradise is well-earned, but it’s not just for scenic leisure rides. For the experienced rider seeking a true test of skill, endurance, and nerve, Aotearoa offers a world-class network of singletrack that will push you to your limits.
From high-alpine descents to remote backcountry epics, the trails here demand respect and reward commitment.
At New Zealand Single Track Adventures, we live for this type of riding. This guide is for the rider who knows their way around a technical line and is ready to take on some of the most challenging singletrack New Zealand has to offer.
Widely regarded as New Zealand’s longest singletrack, The Old Ghost Road is a legendary multi-day trail that is a rite of passage for many experienced riders. This 85-kilometer journey is a true test of endurance and technical skill, taking you through remote wilderness from Lyell on the West Coast to Seddonville. What was once an old gold miners’ route has been transformed into a thrilling, rugged adventure.
The trail features some incredibly technical sections, massive swing bridges, and a challenging climb to its highest point at over 1,300 meters. The remoteness of the trail means you must be completely self-sufficient and prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. The payoff is immense: a sense of accomplishment that comes from conquering a true backcountry epic and stunning, untouched scenery that is inaccessible to most. This is not a trail for the unprepared, but it is one of the incredible experiences included on our Southern Alps Epic MTB Tour.
When it comes to high-octane, gravity-fed riding, Queenstown is in a league of its own. Known as the adventure capital of the world, its vast trail networks and lift-assisted bike parks are purpose-built to challenge even the most seasoned riders.
- Ben Lomond Trails: The trails on Ben Lomond, with their gondola access, are a mecca for advanced riders. Lines like Salmon Run and Squid Run are renowned for their steep, technical, and rooty terrain. The sheer variety and volume of downhill singletrack will keep you busy for days.
- Coronet Peak: Home to world-class enduro and downhill trails, Coronet Peak offers gnarly descents with plenty of technical features. The Coronet DH line is a local favorite, known for its fast, flowing, and technical nature that tests riders’ mettle. This is also where you’ll find the iconic Rude Rock trail, a grade 4 descent that showcases the spectacular alpine scenery of the area.
For riders who want to experience the best of Queenstown’s legendary trails, our Into the Mystic – New Zealand MTB Tour is designed to get you straight to the action, with expert local guides who know every hidden gem and secret line.
For a genuine, raw backcountry experience close to a major city, Craigieburn Forest Park near Christchurch is a must-visit. This park is not a bike park in the traditional sense; it’s a network of raw, hand-built singletrack that is both physically and technically demanding.
- The Craigieburn Trail: This epic 24km trail, rated for intermediate to advanced riders, connects Flock Hill and Castle Hill Village. It’s a challenging ride that traverses exposed ridgelines and descends through lush beech forest. The trail features technical sections like the Hogs Back and the fast-flowing descent of The Luge, offering a true high-country mountain biking experience.
- Craigieburn Edge: An advanced, grade 5 trail, this is a highlight for many riders. Starting near the Craigieburn skifield, it traverses steep scree slopes and then drops into an exhilarating, technical singletrack through native bush, giving you an “on-top-of-the-world” feeling.
This area is a true test of your cross-country and all-mountain skills, rewarding a strong rider with a thrilling, unfiltered experience. The trail surfaces here can be unpredictable, from hard-packed dirt to loose rock, and the alpine environment means you must be prepared for extreme weather. It is the type of place that experienced riders will return to again and again to hone their skills and soak in the majestic, untamed environment.
Alexandra, a hidden gem in Central Otago, offers a unique and exhilarating riding experience that is a departure from the lush, rooty trails of other regions. Here, the landscape is defined by rock. The trails wind their way through schist rock formations, providing a technical challenge that is both thrilling and confidence-inspiring.
- Matangi Station MTB Park: This network of trails is a highlight of the Alexandra riding scene, offering everything from technical rock gardens and challenging descents to fast-flowing singletrack. The local volunteer trail builders have created a playground where the incredible grip of the schist rock allows experienced riders to push their limits on lines that would be impossible elsewhere.
- Flat Top Hill: With a network of trails built by the local mountain bike club, Flat Top Hill offers intermediate to advanced riders stunning views and unique rock formations. The Sphinx Rock Track is a challenging climb that rewards you with a flowing downhill descent and big views of the area.
Our guides will help you discover the best of Alexandra’s trails on our Into the Mystic – New Zealand MTB Tour and our Southerly E-MTB Tour NZ.
For many of New Zealand’s top riders, Nelson is considered the country’s singletrack capital. This region boasts a vast array of technical trails that will challenge and delight the most skilled riders. The trails are famously hand-built, resulting in a unique, raw feel that demands precision and commitment.
- 629 Trail: This Grade 5 (Expert) downhill trail is famous for a reason. Located in the Fringed Hill trail network, it’s a high-speed, feature-rich descent with swooping corners, rock drops, and steep chutes. It’s a trail that keeps you on your toes and is a classic Nelson ride for those seeking a technical challenge.
- Peaking Ridge: An iconic Nelson ride, Peaking Ridge is a long, fast, and rooty downhill singletrack. It descends off the eastern side of the Fringed Hill area and is known for its technical chutes, natural drops, and challenging features. It’s a classic for riders who love a raw, unfiltered trail.
- The Gorge (Wairoa Gorge): Once a billionaire’s private mountain biking playground, this now publicly-accessible bike park is a world-class destination. With over 70km of hand-built singletrack and almost 1,000 meters of vertical descent on every run, The Gorge offers an unparalleled experience. The trails are renowned for their technical rock features, gnarly roots, and steep gradients. Best of all, The Gorge rides exceptionally well in the wet, making it a fantastic all-weather destination. It’s a true gravity-fed paradise that will test your skills and leave you grinning from ear to ear.
Our Southern Alps Epic MTB Tour is designed to take you on a journey through these iconic trails, giving you a taste of the best of Nelson’s riding.
These trails are not for the faint of heart, and proper planning is critical to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
- Fitness and Skills: Be honest with yourself about your fitness level and technical ability. These trails require endurance and advanced bike handling skills.
- Weather: New Zealand’s weather is famously unpredictable. Pack layers, waterproof gear, and be prepared for sun, rain, and wind on the same day.
- Backcountry Preparation: For multi-day trips like the Old Ghost Road, carrying an emergency locator beacon (PLB), a first aid kit, and sufficient food and water is non-negotiable.
- Guide and Shuttle: For a hassle-free experience that maximizes your time on the trail, consider a guided tour. Expert guides can handle logistics, provide local insights, and take you to the best lines for your skill level. What is the best time of year to ride?
The main mountain biking season in New Zealand is from October to April. The warmer months of December through March offer the most reliable weather and best trail conditions, but shoulder seasons can also provide fantastic riding with fewer crowds.
