Welcome to the cream of the crop E- MTB Adventure in the South Island of New Zealand.  This is a unique mountain biking adventure that takes you on a 6-day journey through New Zealand’s most enchanting landscapes, and remote backcountry. This tour focuses on technical singletracks and remote wilderness terrain connecting you with awe-inspiring alpine scenery, from Christchurch to Queenstown. E MTB along some of the country’s best-kept secrets with incredible backcountry trails that are only achievable with a full suspension E Mountain Bike and expert guidance.

Designed for intermediate to advanced riders, this New Zealand E MTB Tour offers a perfect balance of challenge and discovery off the beaten path of the stunning South Island. You’ll ride world-class trails, enjoy the tranquility of remote landscapes, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Central Otago’s wine country. Explore the dramatic trails of the Craigieburn Forest, ride through tussock ridgelines and rocky outcrops in the Lindis and discover private  single tracks on private high country farms in Mt Cook. Ride through rocky desert landscapes with big skies along the picturesque shores of Lake Tekapo, and explore some lesser known singletracks in backcountry areas that are perfect for big views and big E MTB Adventures.

Over the course of 6 action-packed days in the saddle, our New Zealand E-MTB Tour takes you through some of South Islands most spectacular and remote mountain biking trails. From the towering peaks of the Southern Alps to the desert hills of Central Otago, each day brings new challenges and unforgettable scenery. You’ll ride through native Beech Forest and technical singletracks in North Canterbury & The Craigieburn Forest, offering some of NZ’s most perfectly crafted trails.

You’ll head south into the outstanding natural landscapes of The Mackenzie Country, and ride private Merino Sheep singletrack, perfectly made by our wooly mates, on private High Country Stations. Ride through alpine tarns and braided river valleys to find yourself in the heart and soul of New Zealand’s pristine Backcountry. Summit a peak and flow along remote ridgelines over Lake Ohau before exploring “southerly” to Tussock cladded ridelines of the Lindis Pass. exploring on E MTB allows you to delve deeper into NZ’s remote backcountry, where you’ll ride terrain that is seldomly explored with your local MTB guides.

Savor Pinot Noirs and rocky terrain of Alexandra, and finish your E MTB Tour in the adventure capital of Queenstown, where a mix of technical and flow meet great scenery yet again!  With expert guides leading the way, every day is designed to maximize your time on the trails both technical  and scenic connector trails, along with remote backcountry tracks, while offering opportunities to immerse yourself in New Zealand’s awe-inspiring landscapes, some that are even totally exclusive access in parts.

Arrivals, Wharfedale & Blowhard Track

G’day and welcome to New Zealand’s singletrack heaven! After a morning pick-up in Christchurch, we’ll allocate rental bikes and help with any bike maintenance before heading out to the foothills of the Southern Alps.

Our first ride is the Wharfedale Track, a lesser-known gem offering singletrack through beautiful native beech forest, roots, and stream crossings. We can choose to ride this as a greater loop or and up and back.After lunch find yourself climbing up into a wind swept alpine rideline on the Blow Hard Track, offering a longer ascent with some technical sections with a grand finale of great views of the Canterbury Plains and distant peaks.

Tonight, your guides will go over the next 5 days of riding and adventure together.

Craigieburn Mountain Trails

Today we’ll get back in the saddle for more epic riding in the rugged wilderness of Craigieburn Forests. This area is a favorite for hikers, skiers, climbers, and riders.

The ride starts with a gravel road uphill to the bottom of Craigieburn Ski Field, followed by a technical rooty descent on "The Luge" , before flowing on to the open and scenic Dracophyllum and Hogsback Tracks. This area offers some of NZ's most perfectly crafted singletracks, and is loved by the riding community. Your guide will show you some newer singletracks in the area after lunch, via coach stream winding through crisp mountain streams and dry aired peaks. Nothing like a ride in the alpine here mates!

These trails offer a mix of flowy singletrack and technical descents, providing a full day of E- Mountain Biking excitement.

Lake Tekapo & Mt Cook Backcountry Trails

Today we're heading further south into our all time favouirte area of the Mackenzie Country. Big Mountains, big glaciers and wow factor scenery await you here. We have a wonderful combination of private sheep singletrack , where your guides will offer you access to some of the prettiest scenery in NZ,through private High Country Stations around Lake Tekapo & Mt Cook. We'll enjoy rides through native tussocks with incredible views of Lake Tekapo , alpine lakes and wonderful glaciers. We’ll then move onto a secret sheep singletrack with stunning views of Mt Cook and Lake Pukaki. We'll ride our way through roaming sheep, before arriving at a private Sheep Station, with a converted shearer’s quarters with views to die for. Tonight we'll enjoy a home made BBQ as we welcome some of the clearest skies in the world, and enjoy star gazing at its finest right out the backdoor.

This day is all about exploring the remote backcountry and soaking in the serenity of New Zealand’s breathtaking alpine landscapes of The Mackenzie Country. No other riders can experience this riding without our access.

Lake Ohau & Lindis Backcountry

Rising to stunning views of Mt Cook & the turquoise glacial fed waters of Lake Pukaki, were heading to a lesser known stunning area of The Mackenzie Basin. Lake Ohau is our riding destination which offers spectacular alpine scsnery of the headwaters of the Southern Alps. We're off to tackle a lesser known gem of a ride up Ben Ohau Peak, with a steep climb with stunning views of glaciated peaks and remote valleys heading into the main devide of the Southern Alps. Enjoy a wonderful ridgeline ride down to the forested sub alpine of Greta Valley, for lunch amoungst serenity and native bush.

After lunch , were off to the super scenic Lindis Pass Reserve, where hills of golden tussock and rocky outcrops await us. We'll tackle a new bacckountry ride in the remote Lindis Pass Scenic reserve through velvet looking hills into a wonderful alpine environment.

Cromwell, Alexandra & Clyde

Today were off to warm up along the Dunstan Mountain Trail, which is a newly built cycle trail offering fantastic scenery along rivers and rocky desert landscapes of Central Otago. We'll ride to a wonderful riding destination of Alexandra, where we'll tackle some fun singletracks of Flat Top Mountain and beyond. There's a whole network of wonderful technical rocky rides in the area, your guide will have fun showing you around the variety of terrain and scenery in this lesser known local riding area of Alex.

After riding, we’ll enjoy wine tastings at local pinot noir growing vineyards, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. This region is home to some of the Worlds finest Pinot Noirs, that we just cant seam to get overseas!

Tonight we'll enjoy lovely meals at one of the many boutique restaurants by the riverside in a small town called Clyde.

Queenstown Departure

Good morning! After a delicous flat white coffee or two, we're off to drive to Queenstown the famous adventure capital, and also home to some great mountain biking. We've chosen to explore some of our favourite rides linking up a mulitude of singletracks around the Coronet Peak area. Starting with a valley floor climb trail, we'll ascend up to Skippers Saddle, before making a very fun tight backcountry descent into Skippers Canyon. Riding back up out of the Canyon, we'll connect up to the summit of Coronet Peak trails and descend the ultra famous flowey Rude Rock trail. Then we connect onto a water race to a super fun adventure ride of Bush Creek, all the way to Arrowtown for a well deserved cold bevie.

The rides around this area offer a full day of exploration and smiles in the saddle. This afternoon, for those still feeling like there's fuel in the tank, there heaps more riding around the shores of Lake Wakatipu, your guide will happily show you around.

This evening is our farewll dinner together, as we relive the last 6 days of epic singletrack through New Zealnd's stunning Southern Alps.

What's the Weather Like?

New Zealand’s weather is as varied as its landscapes, particularly in the Southern Alps. During the MTB season from December to April, you can expect:

Summer (December to February):
Warm days with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). The weather is generally stable, but it’s not uncommon to experience sudden changes, particularly in alpine regions. Afternoon showers can occur, so packing a light rain jacket is essential.

Autumn (March to April):
Cooler mornings and evenings, with daytime temperatures between 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The weather remains mostly clear, but you might encounter the occasional shower or cooler winds as the season transitions. Autumn is also a great time to enjoy the changing colors of the landscape.

Alpine Conditions:
Higher elevations can experience cooler temperatures and more unpredictable weather year-round. Be prepared for chilly winds and potential snow at higher altitudes, even in summer.

It's important to be prepared for all types of weather during your ride. Layering is key, as conditions can change rapidly, especially in mountainous areas. Our guides will keep you informed about the forecast, but having the right gear is essential to staying comfortable and safe.

How Fit Do I Need To Be?

This E MTB Tour is designed for intermediate riders with a good level of fitness and a passion for adventure. You should be comfortable with sustained climbs, technical descents, and riding for multiple hours each day. This tour covers a variety of terrains, from flowy singletracks to more challenging alpine trails, so building up your endurance and strength before the trip is essential. With some days covering significant distances and varying altitudes, this tour will challenge and reward you with some of the best mountain biking New Zealand has to offer. Whether you’re climbing through rugged terrain or cruising down scenic descents, your physical preparation will ensure you get the most out of this incredible experience.

What's The Terrain Like?

From the rolling hills of the Craigieburn Range to longer climbs into the alpine and the technical singletracks of the Queenstown area, this tour showcases New Zealand’s stunning backcountry landscapes. You’ll experience everything from smooth, flowy trails through alpine meadows to rocky, technical descents that test your skills. The iconic Craigieburn Forest and trails around Lake Tekapo provide breathtaking alpine views, while the rugged terrain near Central Otago offers the unique experience of riding through wild thyme and moon rock formations. What is the difficulty level of this tour?

This tour is designed for intermediate riders. The trails offer a mix of technical sections, flowy singletracks, and challenging climbs. Even though this is power assisted by an E MTB, it still requires riders to be in decent shape to maximise the bigger days in the saddle. Some of the bigger alpine rides require more gradual climbing. While the terrain can be demanding, our guides are there to provide support and ensure everyone enjoys the ride.

What kind of bike should I bring?

We recommend a full-suspension mountain bike with appropriate gearing for steep climbs and technical descents. Either a trail bike or an enduro bike is suitable, with front suspension of at least 140mm and at least 130mm in the back. 29" wheel size or 27.5" depending on your preference. Your bike should be in excellent condition, with recently serviced brakes, suspension, and drivetrain. If you’re unsure about your bike’s suitability, feel free to contact us for advice or consider renting a high-quality bike through our small rental fleet or our partner bike shops.

What accommodations can I expect?

You’ll stay in a variety of accommodations that reflect the unique character of New Zealand’s South Island. These include boutique lodges that offer comfort and charm, as well as a backcountry hut for one night. The backcountry hut provides a rustic yet comfortable experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness. Expect shared sleeping arrangements and communal meals in the backcountry hut and at the sheep station. Other accommodations offer private rooms and modern amenities. We even stay at a private high-country sheep farm that has some of the best views of the Southern Alps and glaciers, and is the highlight of the trip in many cases.

How do I prepare physically for this tour?

Given the intermediate to advanced nature of our tours, it’s important to prepare physically to ensure you can enjoy the riding experience. Focus on building your endurance, strength, and technical riding skills. We recommend regular mountain biking on varied terrain, as well as cross-training activities like running, swimming, or strength training. This preparation will help you handle the longer days in the saddle and the technical trails found on this tour.

What should I pack?

A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking. It’s important to be prepared for a range of weather conditions, so layering is key. We recommend packing cycling gear, casual clothing for evenings, a lightweight rain jacket, personal toiletries, and any specialized equipment you might need. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hydration pack. Riders will need a proper riding daypack (no bum bags, sorry!) as you will be expected to carry a few layers on rides due to the changeable weather and the remote & backcountry alpine rides we do.

What’s the best way to arrive and depart?

We recommend arriving in Christchurch at least a day before the tour starts to ensure you are ready to ride on Day 1. The tour ends in Queenstown, and we provide drop-offs at Queenstown Airport or your hotel on the final day. Detailed instructions for getting to the tour start location will be provided upon booking.

How do you handle emergencies on the trail?

Our guides are trained in pre hospital emergency carefirst aid and carry emergency equipment and contact reach on all rides. We have protocols in place for contacting emergency services, and our guides are familiar with the nearest medical facilities. Your safety is our top priority, and we are well-prepared to handle a variety of situtations that may arrise.

What if the weather prevents us from riding certain trails?

While we ride in most weather conditions, extreme weather may require us to alter or cancel rides. In such cases, we will provide alternative activities or reschedule rides to ensure your safety. Our guides will keep you informed and ensure that you still have an unforgettable experience.

As Kiwi as it gets, he hails from a long history of guiding throughout New Zealand and overseas. From the Milford Track, driving jet boats on the Hollyford Track, to multi-day hiking tours and enduro mountain bike expeditions, he is a man of many talents! Filled with a rich and passionate knowledge of geology, history, and wild places. He's been riding bikes since he was 5 and loves being behind the bars on a technical trail. Ben is the co-founder of NZ Single Track Adventures and enjoys sharing his passion with people from around the globe. In his downtime, you can find him riding bikes with the kids, hunting, tramping, and being a mechanic to bikes and vehicles.
